In conversations around girls’ safety, one idea often dominates: restriction. Early curfews, limited mobility, constant supervision, and a long list of “don’ts” are commonly seen as protective measures. While safety is essential, it should never come at the cost of a girl’s freedom, confidence, and individuality. Spreading Bliss Foundation (SBF), we believe that girls deserve both protection and the freedom to live.
The Problem with Overprotection
For generations, society has placed the burden of safety on girls rather than addressing the root causes of insecurity. Instead of making public spaces safer, we often limit where girls can go, what they can wear, and how they express themselves. This approach may seem protective, but it quietly reinforces fear and inequality.
When girls are constantly told to “be careful” or “stay within limits,” it sends a subtle message that the world is unsafe for them and that their freedom is negotiable. Over time, this can affect their confidence, independence, and decision-making.
Safety Should Empower, Not Restrict
True safety is not about control; it is about empowerment. Girls should feel equipped, aware, and confident to navigate the world, not confined by it. This means shifting our focus from restriction to education and preparedness.
Teaching girls about personal safety, boundaries, and their rights builds confidence. Encouraging open communication ensures they feel heard and supported. When girls understand how to respond to unsafe situations, they are not just protected—they are empowered.
At the same time, safety must also be a shared societal responsibility. It is not enough to prepare girls; we must also work towards creating environments where respect and accountability are the norm.
The Role of Families and Communities
Families play a crucial role in shaping how girls perceive safety and freedom. Instead of imposing restrictions, parents can build trust, encourage independence, and have honest conversations about challenges girls may face. When girls feel trusted, they are more likely to make informed and responsible choices.
Communities, too, must evolve. Schools, neighbourhoods, and institutions should actively promote gender sensitivity, equality, and safe spaces. Boys and men must be part of this conversation, learning respect, consent, and responsibility from an early age.
Freedom Is Not a Risk, It Is a Right
Freedom is not a privilege reserved for a few; it is a fundamental right. Girls have the right to dream, explore, learn, and grow without fear. Restricting their freedom does not eliminate danger; it limits their potential.
Spreading Bliss Foundation (SBF), we work to create a balance in which girls are informed, supported, and safe without being restricted. Through awareness programmes, community engagement, and conversations around dignity and equality, we aim to build a society where girls can thrive without fear.
A Future Where Girls Don’t Have to Choose
The goal is simple: a world where girls do not have to choose between safety and freedom. A world where they can walk confidently, speak openly, and live fully, knowing they are respected and protected.
Because true empowerment lies not in limiting girls, but in liberating them with safety, dignity, and equal opportunity.
We aim to empower those who truly deserve encouragement. We believe education is the key to liberating a person and that makes education one of our major working areas.
