The Grand Journey of the Gods : Celebrating Ratha Yatra 2025

Celebrating Ratha Yatra 2025 Spreading Bliss Foundation

Every year, the streets of Puri, Odisha come alive with the thunder of drums, the chants of devotees, and the sight of three massive, colourfully decorated chariots rolling through the crowd. This isn’t just a festival, it’s Ratha Yatra, one of the most iconic celebrations in India, deeply rooted in devotion, tradition, and community spirit.

What is Ratha Yatra?

Ratha Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is a centuries-old Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Krishna), his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. The word Ratha means chariot and Yatra means journey; so quite literally, this is a divine journey of the gods.

When and Where?

While Ratha Yatra is celebrated in many parts of India and even around the world (thanks to ISKCON), the most famous and grandest celebration takes place in Puri, Odisha, typically in June or July, on the second day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashadha.

What Happens During Ratha Yatra?

The deities are taken out of the Jagannath Temple, placed on gigantic wooden chariots, and pulled by thousands of devotees along a 3-kilometer stretch to the Gundicha Temple, where they stay for 7 days before returning. The act of pulling the chariots is considered deeply auspicious and the devotees believe it washes away sins and brings spiritual blessings.

Each chariot is a spectacle in itself:

Why is it So Special?

  1. Inclusivity: During Ratha Yatra, the gods come out of the temple, which is normally restricted to Hindus. This symbolizes openness and inclusion. God stepping out for everyone, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
  2. Community and Devotion: The energy of the crowd, the chants of “Jai Jagannath,” and the sea of humanity pulling the ropes together is a powerful reminder of shared faith and unity.
  3. Cultural Grandeur: From traditional Odissi dances to massive offerings of Mahaprasad, Ratha Yatra is also a celebration of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

A Touch of Legend

According to legend, Ratha Yatra represents Lord Krishna’s journey from Gokul to Mathura. In another version, it is believed to be the time when Lord Jagannath, eager to visit his birthplace, steps out with his siblings to meet devotees and relive his past.

Beyond Puri

Thanks to the global efforts of spiritual organizations like ISKCON, Ratha Yatra is now celebrated across the world spreading the message of love, devotion, and inclusivity.

On this sacred occasion of Ratha Yatra 2025, Spreading Bliss Foundation offers its warmest wishes to devotees across the globe. May the divine chariot of Lord Jagannath bring prosperity, peace, and spiritual awakening into your lives.
